Immediate Relief Operation

Immediate Relief Operations

The voluntary team of Ne:KALP was ready to provide relief to various quake affected areas in Nepal within a week of the first earthquake of April 2015. A detailed report specifying the relief operations of the voluntary team along with budget and donor details is to be found in the file below.

Sanitation Initiative: Building Temporary Toilets

Selang VDC in Sindhupalchowk District of Nepal had successfully become a 100% open defecation free zone in 2012. This was a huge milestone for the VDC in terms of developing as a healthy and sustainable community.

The Earthquake destroyed most of the houses in the region, one of the biggest challenges that emerged were of proper sanitation facilities. Open defecation was a practice long discontinued by the villagers in this area. While the absence of such private facilities made life difficult, even more grave was the problem of having no toilets in school compounds. Greater risk of contamination was present here more so for girl students.

One of the initial projects of Ne:KALP, therefore, in this area were to install at least two temporary toilets each in every school of the VDC. Our team provided the School communities with all basic construction material for building toilets along with instructions for building the toilet and sanitation supplies to maintain the same.

Providing Recreational Equipment

Ne:KALP has developed a specific focus on assisting the child population affected by the trauma induced by the series of earthquakes in 2015. Our team recognized schools as strategic sites which can be developed as hubs of psychosocial counselling through recreational engagement. That is, a location where children can come together, share their experience and mutually overcome the distress of witnessing loss of life and property at such a young age.

Putting the same in practice Ne:KALP arranged for providing each of the ten schools in Selang VDC, Sindhupalchowk with recreation equipment. These included:

  • Footballs
  • One Volleyball Set including nets and air pump
  • One football each
  • One set of Carom board
  • Frisbees
  • Skipping ropes
  • Beanie Bags
